About the Position: 
The Director of Marketing & Communications will collaborate with VP of Marketing & Communications, the Senior Manager of Social Media/Digital Content and the Manager of Media Relations and Storytelling as well as teams across the organization to create and implement an innovative and integrated communications strategy that builds and distinguishes the First Book brand as a household name among its target audiences including media; Industry influencers; potential and current corporate partners, supporters/donors and educators. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1.    Manage communications and branding standards for First Book:
•    Manage messaging standards to ensure messaging is consistent across channels, working with Manager of Social Media/Digital Content and Manger of Media Relations and Storytelling
o    Working with VP, continually update and improve messaging in response to new initiatives and opportunities 
•    Manage graphic standards, look and feel, and approved messaging for First Book brand
•    Provide and update tools and resources to assure the above
•    Working with Manager of Media Relations and Storytelling, manage collection and compilation of industry data, First Book impact stories, photos and videos to serve as proof points for messaging and storylines
•     Advise teams across the organization on both messaging and branding needs/requirements

2.    Manage day-to-day activities of the First Book branding and communication efforts:
•    Work with MarComm team to develop and execute on a cross-platform, measurable and effective communications strategy
•    Working with VP and partners across the organization, manage and sheets, one-pagers and annual report
•    Support the organization on the following:
o    Event management (as needed; to assist other departments)
o    Speechwriting (as needed; to assist executive team)
o    Provide assistance, as needed, for Canadian team in message development and branding
•    Work with SVP Strategic Alliances to support execution of partnership deliverables
•    Track and manage project deliverables, ensuring on-time delivery
•    Apply expert project management skills to establish and reorder priorities as needed to accommodate the dynamic nature of our work, both generally and given First Book’s rapid growth 
•    Account for project costs, with variance to budget if appropriate
•    Serve as primary daily point of contact for other departments regarding their branding and communications needs. Act as advisor to help others stay on message
•    Be available for execution support and oversight outside of designated business hours, should the need arise, and proactively check for communication
•    Assist VP and other team members, as needed, on supervision of outside graphics and PR professionals

3.    Oversee Manager of Media Relations and Storytelling to develop and execute a strategic media relations effort to tell the First Book story.
•    Build and leverage targeted media relationships across channels
•    Develop effective storylines and proof points for pitching stories to media
•    Explore opportunities for by lined article/op-ed pieces and ghost write for First Book spokespeople
•    Oversee Manager in:
o    Responding to incoming media requests
o    Preparing First Book spokespeople to respond to media with briefing materials and message points
o    Coordinating interviews and follow up as needed
o    Tracking media coverage, add to website, share across organization and among key audiences, compile reporting

4.    Oversee Manager of Social Media/Digital Content to execute strategic social media efforts to tell the First Book story and engage audiences, including guidance on:
•    Collaborating with internal teams to brainstorm and define innovative content marketing campaigns to enable stakeholders to meet their marketing objectives
•    Managing the editorial schedule for all First Book content platforms including social channels, blog, and website (firstbook.org)
•    Managing First Book's presence and online social media community on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, collaborating with other Marketing Communications staff to curate and create content
•    Coordinating content, production and distribution of CEOs influencer email update on a monthly basis

5.    Build personal marketing knowledge and expertise:
•    Stay curious about trends and developments in non-profit marketing, watching other similar organizations for examples 
•    Manage the performance and deliverables of department interns:
•    Interview intern candidates with team managers to find talented candidates with appropriate skills.
•    Manage their work experience with First Book
•    Work to develop a skills and mentoring path to help guide their development and work product

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:
•    Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including writing and editing effective and compelling copy for a wide variety of channels and audiences
•    Ability to perform quality work under tight deadlines and manage projects independently
•    Experience with media relations and public relations strategies
•    Experience with social media/digital content strategies
•    Knowledge of effective branding and marketing strategies
•    Ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues on various teams, across different levels of seniority
•    A working knowledge of graphic design
•    Experience with wordpress
•    Curiosity about trends and developments in non-profit marketing, watching other similar organizations for examples 
•    A commitment to social justice

Education and/or Experience: 
•    Ten+ years of experience in communications and marketing
•    Three+ years in a supervisory role
•    Various technical skills are strongly preferred: online content management, experience with graphic design 
•    A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in marketing, business, communications, or a related field.
